Mustang is a story of five teenage sisters who live with their aunt, uncle and grandmother in a northern Turkish village. When they are seen innocently playing with some boys on the beach, the family overreacts, removing all ‘instruments of corruption,’ like cell phones and computers, and essentially imprisoning the girls, subjecting them to endless lessons in housework in preparation for them to become brides. As the eldest sisters are married off, the younger ones bond together to avoid the same fate. Erguven’s debut film is a raw, funny and moving portrayal of modern female empowerment.
